The Ultimate Guide Experiencing King of the Hammers 2024

Josh Descalopoulis

Welcome to our King of the Hammers series! Today, we're focusing on the fans, the heart and soul of KOH. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned attendee, this guide is your key to making the most out of the 2024 event.

Before You Go:

When packing for the King of the Hammers in the desert environment of Hammertown, there are several essential items you should consider:

1.Weather-Appropriate Clothing: The desert can be extremely hot during the day and cold at night. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing for daytime and warm layers for the evening. Face coverings, anything from masks, bandanas, or neck wraps, anything you can get tight. There is a lot of Dust in the air from all the vehicles. We recommend finding a way to be comfortable for the entire trip but being able to cover your mouth and even eyes if possible.

  1. Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and wide-brimmed hat. Anything of your choice to cover yourself. These are crucial to protect yourself against sunburn, especially if you're going to be there longer than a day.

  1. Hydration Supplies: Bring plenty of water. Consider hydration packs for convenience. Even an extra water tank for washing off parts, clothes, and body parts.

  1. Camping Gear: If you're staying in Hammertown, you'll need a sturdy tent, sleeping bag, and possibly an air mattress for comfort. Honestly we would recommend some sort of RV, Trailer or Camper. Between the dust alone and having shelter the nights are extremely cold and the protection was much appreciated at the end of the trip.

  1. Cooking Equipment: Portable stoves, coolers for food storage, and cooking utensils, portable fridge if possible. There are a lot of food vendors in Hammer town so at the end of the day we really just recommend breakfast so you're not running first thing to eat, as well as you brown beverages and coffee of choice. Me and the family knowing this will still bring plenty of food to have options and the hope to cook.

  1. Navigation Tool: While GPS is handy, a physical map of the area can be a reliable backup. onXOffroad is an excellent app you can upload to your phone with great features like offline maps.

  1. First Aid Kit: Always be prepared for minor injuries. Or even a way of communication to call for help, like a good set of two way radios or “ walkie talkies”.

  1. Portable Charging Devices: To keep your electronics charged. You'll also be able to find wifi and charge stations around Hammertown.

  1. Flashlights and Lanterns: For visibility at night. I would recommend multiple lights for everyone, both for trial fix needs, or simply walking between buddies campsites. It's dusty, it's dark, and it's dangerous at night walking around at night.

  1. Trash Bags: Practice Leave No Trace principles to keep the environment clean. This includes your Human Waste as well.

Remember, the key to enjoying KOH is preparation. These essentials will help ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience in Hammertown.

Navigating Hammertown:

- Finding Your Way: Navigating Hammertown, the bustling hub of the King of the Hammers, requires a bit of planning and the right tools. The onX Offroad app is a fantastic resource for mapping your way around this temporary city. It provides detailed maps of the area, including points of interest like food vendors, medical stations, and restrooms. This app can be especially helpful in locating essential services and planning your day efficiently.. Staying oriented and making the most of the services available will enhance your KOH experience.

Best Spots for Race Watching:

- A few renowned locations that are typically popular among spectators:

  1. Hammertown: The central hub of the event, offering a vibrant atmosphere with vendor displays, food options, and a chance to see the teams up close.

  1. Chocolate Thunder: A famous spot known for its challenging terrain, offering spectators a view of some of the most thrilling parts of the race.

  1. Backdoor: A notorious obstacle that provides a great vantage point to witness the technical skills of drivers as they navigate difficult rock sections.

  1. Sledgehammer: Another popular area where spectators can watch racers tackle one of the toughest parts of the course.

  1. Means Dry Lake Bed: A good spot for those who want to see high-speed desert racing action.

To enhance your race-watching experience at King of the Hammers, it's advisable to research your favorite drivers or teams beforehand, noting their race times and events. This planning allows you to determine the best viewing spots for the races you're most interested in. Additionally, it's beneficial to scout the location before any major race or event to identify prime viewing areas. This preparation ensures you make the most of your time and enjoy the best possible views of the action.
